NGAKAWAU NOTES

Work at the Sloeklon mine has a iwtle better lor at least mic !'■*>. I.ast fortnight the mine worked nine shifts. The outlook for the pre. n-jseut pay, however, is eery black. The c |mine has been idle since back Satury day, and prospects are most certainly nut good. <• There has been a little better feel. o:ing and understanding between the h ; management and the I nion since the I 'las! trouble, and it is to be hoped that r J this attitude will prevail for a long f time. | l ft is understood that the Manage, e incut arc busy during the time the , mine is idle installing a new winch in s the main section of the mine. There .[have been repeated attempts to induce > a winch which took considerable time Ito get into position, to do a little ?. work, but unfortunately for the min. > ers, the inducements did not have the i desired effect of making the stubborn wheels go round. Let us hope the ■’work now being put on this winch will bear fruit, as it is the miner at the ■ face who is suffering through lack of trucks, coupled with the fact that this I particular section, Fly Creek, is exceedingly wet, and the men find it ■difficult to keep up a. heat when they are forced to go easy through lack of ’trucks. Considerable comment is hnnt-d

_ amongst the workers at Stockton mine -■regarding the -working of two of the i ’horses. Both these horses have for a I 'great number of years (nearly twenty) •[been faithful servants to the Company, ? and yet we find them still struggling r along, trying to do the impossible, s [Surely, in this advanced ago, such a i thing should not be thought of. I • trust the powers that be will take note ’■ of these remarks, and that we will have the pleasure of seeing ‘‘Prince’'’ • and “.Chance” enjoying a little lei. • sure and retirement. > It is good to report that a Domain •£pard has been formed in Ngakawau, land the general public give all jUssistance to this body. A large piece jof ground in Hector, has been applied for, and everything points to this | ground (about 4 acres) being laid aside for the local sports. Messrs A!’Don laid Bros have' already done consider, [able work to the ground, and there is a line track. The Domain Board as constituted is:—President, Air Jas. M’Bride; Secretary, Air F. Burns; Committee. Alessrs Crase. Al’Donald. Alorganti, Edwards and Reid. We have a library in the township of Hector, but unfortunately the shutters have been up for a considerable time. Air Crase has been asked to cal! a meeting for the purpose of pulling down the shutters, so that business may be carried on once again. The residents should take a keen interest in fhis necessary institution. If if is not to the liking of some, let them become interested and state their views as to any improvement. The Ngakawau junior Rugby team travel to Denniston on Saturday. As everything points to a very tight finish in the competition this year, this promises to be an exceptionally keen game, and the local boys can be trusted to put forth an extra effort on Saturday. While a local carting contractor was doing a very kindly act recently, he stopped his horse near the centre of of the road. Unfortunately a motor car came along, and had to draw up until the horse was pulled to the side. I don’t suppose the delay to the motorist. was of more than two or three minutes’ duration, hut our friend Hie contractor, has been hailed before the Alagistratc for causing an obstruction. Undoubtedly an obstruction was caused, but it is very unfortunate that when the contractor was doing a good turn to an old “timer,” this particular car should come along. I feel certain if the occupant of the car had realised why the horse and dray were stopped, they would have felt more inclined to get out and assist the man who was causing the obstruction. The case conies off shortly, and the residents of this locality feel that only one decision would meet the “crime.”
