(Received June 24 at 8.30 p.m.) (Reuter). PARIS, June 23. The Chamber of Deputies was packed to hear M. Painleve’s statement regard ing Morocco. He 'emphasised the Go. vernmeht’s wish for peace. He explained that France was merely defending her territory. The Government hoped to publish joint FrancoSpanish -peace terms shortly but if the French wished Abdel Krim not to fol. low the counsels of the German, Russian, and Egyptian adventurers now around him they must not give the impression that France is ready to make all the concessions in order to obtain peace. M. Painleve read Abdel Krim’s proclamation of a holy war against the enemies of Islam, and also read documents sowing Bolshevik incitement to the Riffians, including the French Com munist Parliamentary Party,s telegram congratulating Abdel Krim on a victory .

ZINOVIEFF AND RIFFS. (Sun Cable). PARIS, June 24. The light in the Chamber of Deputies followed upon Premier Painleve’s reading a letter from M. Zinovieff (Russia) expressing Hie opinion that Abdel Krim was a useful leader against France. M. Painleve denounced Deputy Doriot for writing and congratulating Abdel Krim cn his successes against Spain. Colonel Picot, who is white-haired, and is the leader of the ex-Service. men’s organisation, rushed and struck Doriot on the jaw. Immediately the Deputies joined in a melee of single handed combats. DEBATE ENDS IN FREE FIGHT. (Received .June 20 at 9.40 p.m.) PARIS, June 24. There was indignation in the Chamber of Deputies upon Premier Painleve reading a statement made by a Communist Deputy (M. Doriot) fore telling the defeat of Frnce. M. Painleve then read translations of pamphlets in Arabic, calling on the ’Moors to revolt against France. The Premier concluded with an impassioned appeal to the Socialists to support the Government. The Chamber thereafter listened to an interpretation by M. Doriot lauding Sovietism and denouncing capitalism. Suddenly M. Doriot was interrupted by a Right Deputy Col. Picot, who Unshed up and punched M . Doriot’s face.

A mild effort at revolt was made by the Socialists in submitting a minor ’amendment, which the Government promptly accepted, and embodied in the resolution “Thereafter M. Painlevc’s position was secured.” RIFF ATTACK REPUIXED HEAVY FIGHTING. LONDON, June 24. A message from Tangier states that the Riffs made a determined attack on the French lines north of Mezzan. They were repulsed. Heavx’ fighting continues in the region of Jibelbiban. EVACUATION OP RUHR. PARIS, June 23. Oabrnet approved the measures de. cided upon by M. Painlove and M. Briaud, with a view to carrying out the engagements entered into with regard to the evacuation of the Ruhr. The operations will commence shortly.
