AIRSHIP PLAN THAT FORESHADOWS NEW TRAVEL ERA. LONDON, May 8. A new era of air travel is possible as a result of changes that have been made in. the design of the 5,000,000 cubic feet airship being built for the Government. Commander C. D. Burney, M.P., who is in charge of the airship’s construction, has also evolved, with Mr B. M. iiDari', a new type of mast. which will facilitate landing and em. barking of passengers. ICxj/erts from : • Zeppelin works in Germany and from America have examined the mast and agreed that it shall be provisionally adopted as the standard to vhi''h all commercial mooring masts in America and 'Germany will conform. WHERE THE BASES MAY BL. The airship itself is designed on the stream.line principle. The passenger saloons are in the body of the vessel; the control and observation compartments in the nose. 'This simplification of designs ensures, as proved by experiments at the National Physical laiboratory, a considerable increase in the range of flight. Commander Burney estimates that the most economical bases for the new vessels will be Bagdad, which should be reached in two days; Colombo, in four days; Fremantle, in six and a half days; and Auckland. New Zealand, in nine days. There will be 'ample sleeping, eating and rest rooms for passengers. Hot meals will be provided and passengers ’ ’T enjoy even greater amenities than those provided on long land journeys. The mooring.mast provides an entirely new method of attachment for an airship, and for the first time makes it possible for an air vessel to bo moored consistently to a floating base. There is a central .Iff, by which pas. sengers ascend to the platform.
