HOKITIKA NOTES.
(Uur own Correspondent/. The s.s. Orewa, which left Napier a couple of days ago, is expected here any day. Since leaving Auckland, the little vessel has had a really bad time, having encountered some of thc recent heavy gales on thc North Island Coasts. So far some of the opossum hunters in the Kanieri Lake district have done fairly well. On e trapper is said to have already secured 700 skbns. Now that the whitebait season is approaching, there are signs of agitation amongst local whitebait fishermen and others over the sawmills dumping their sawdust in to the Hokitika River. The Mananui sawmill has ceased cutting for a few days. Mr. J. Cuttancc, who for a great number of years past has held the positions of postmaster and Harbour signal ma,n at Okura, South Westland has disposed of his property in the far South, and has taken up his residenc«? in Hokitika. Lately there has been a considerable falling off m the attendance at the local picture entertainments. Evidently the fans prefer to remain home by the fireside these cold evenings.
