STOCKTON NOTES

(Our own Correspondent). The wealt.her here has been very good lately, but cold as the result, oi southerly winds which at times have been blowing a. gale. The. Stockton Mint* has been working very fair time, since me last threc-day strike, but was idle on. Friday a.nd Monday last, owing to the dismantling of some machinery at the Ngakawan binns, which is now rends' to send to the new bmns near Mangatina Creek. 'Since my last notes we have had a visit from Mr H. E. Holland, Leader of the- Labour Party, also Mr I . Armstrong, M.P., on an organising mission for the Labour Party s fighting fund. The Stockton Labour Party held a concert and dance on Friday last, which was a huge success, the proceeds being devoted to the national Labour Fighting Fund. Owmg to a bitter cold wind blowing, there were not very many at the concert, but after the dance started the hall was packed to its fullest capacity. A verv sumptuous supper was provided by the ladies, to whom great praise is due. Messrs Ellis and Cranston (piano) and violin) supplied t.he mu sic. and Messrs Shearer and O'Hara had chaige of the floor. On Saturday last a quiet but pretty wedding took place at (>ramty

The contracting parties wore Mrs Potter, and Mr D. Kelly, both o! Stockton. in the evening, I fiends were entertained in the Stockton Public Hall, at a social and dance, which lasted until midnighi, when everyone wended their way homeward well satisfied with u good evening’s enjoyment. FOOTBALL. On Saturday last at Ngakawan. the Buller Rugby Union ran t.wo matches, Town v. Country, senior anti junior. The junior match was played first, as a curtain raiser to the other, but. as an exhibition of fixAbalT, it was very disappointing, Tx ing nothing more than a scramble from start to finish. Only one or d.wo of the players on either side showed anyihing like football. Mr UopperSinith, of Denniston, had charge of the whistle in the junior match. The Town team jus; won by a narrowmargin. T he senior inateh was very much a repetition of the first, with the il’lference that the country team won by 12 points to three. Mr Tiplady ha«l cluirgc of the whistle. While on the topic of Rugby, 1 would like to draw ‘b - Buller Rugbx Union's attention e question ot players coming’ <’•> to the ground different-coloured jerseys. Il m> memory serxes me rightly, they passed a resolution that if teams did not enter the field of play in their proper colours, the- referee should licit, let them play. Now, why does not the Union set a good example to < lubs by putting their Town rep. team on the field with a proper set of jerseys? In the fust match on Saturday, ih»‘ Town team came on in in ■*.rlv all the colours of the rainbow. ! is not- fair to the other team, mu to Ihe referee. SOCCER. To Siockion Hearts Junior Soever team played their opening match on Sunday nt Stockton, the Dennision juniors being their opponents. Great credit is due 1o them im travelling so far in such bitter cold weather. The Denniston team took the field with only ten men, while •the Stocktonites had to put on a scratch team, owing to some of then mon being indisnosed. They led off with the wind, .. -n was blowing a gn'.e in their favour, ami after-a very short time notched their first goal. It was hard to say who was responsible for it. but the general opinion of those present was that the wind scored! Starting off again, the wind helped them considerably, and after a few more minutes' play, the ball wais sent, across, and Rodger scoivd. The wind was still keeping up the pace, and very often carried the bad out of th,, rcaeh of the players, who had the appearance of tiling. but just before the whistle sounded hall time, the ball was sent to I’idwell (a Rugbv half), who was playing- CerAre forward. He accepted and drove the ball between the posts with a welljudged kick. Thus the first hall Imished with Stockton leading -three to nil. when the second spell started. Iho Denniston lads were not. long in making their combination telt, and with the wind in their favour, the;, soon had "Ginger” Geddes. the home goalie, ai work defending h.“ goal, but the boys in blue were not p, be denied, ami very soon' they started 'to score. About, this tune. Berry, file Stockton secretary, na to retire with an injury to his km-e. thus leaving the two teams equal m strength. After a short, lime of t>lay, the Visitors scored the equalising ..hot. The home team made repeated ..fforts to score another goal, but without avail, and the game finished three all. The visiting team had a good combination, and answered to the call of their coach (Smally) very promptly. The Stockton team lacked combination, but, with practice, they have the makings of some very good players, the most prominent among them being Hunter. Sheaiei and Chippendale. Pidwell also played a good game, considering it was his first game of Soccer. Tn the afternoon the Millerton Thistles met and ' the Denniston Pirates by one to nil. Here again the wind was blowing a gal?, and it was hard to see tile players for dust, which made it very uncomfortable both for players and spectators. Tn this match also, the Den-

niston team showed the bet ter eombinaltion and football, some of their passing being very neat. Tli e first half of the game finished without a score. Tn the second, the wind had dropped to ] retty near a dead calm 'rhe visiting team had .the sun m their faces, xvhiah in the opinion ct this scribe, was the principal factor m the goal that was scored against them. Not knowing to names of tli“ visitors, I cannot pick out any individual player to praise or oth rxx iso. Of the home team Sturr (centre’ half )played the best, game- . McArthur as left-half did very well, but I think th- Thistles would be wise if t hex - played him in bis proper position. which is full-back. They were very fortunate in. getting a; win, tlm more so as it is the first defeat I’m Pirates have bad this season. Mr Hexvifson had charge of die whistle in 'the senior game, and Mr Chippendale in the junior. The Stockton team xvishes me ’< state that they are xvilling to p’av a friendly game on their own groimc 4 xvifh any eleven xvho woul] like ’< 'Dino along—nobodx' barrecT. team who would like to Lry ib“ ’ luck, kiiidlx- communicate with Ib f Secretary Stockton Soreo*- " Chib.
