QUEENSLAND’S CHIEF JUSTICE. BRISBANE, April 22. Justice Blair has been appointed Chief Justice in succession to the late Judge McCawley. The Solicitor-Gen-eral, Mr W. At the trial of Withers, whose arrest was cabled on February 12th, the accused pleaded not guilty of murdering his wife. In a statement, he said his wife was guilty of misconduct with EdWard Missen, for whom sho worked. He said that on the night of the tragedy, he went to see his wife at Missen’s house, and as Missen had previously threatened to shoot him, he took a revolver for protection. While talking to his wife, sho bumped his revolver, which exploded, killing her. The jury returned a verdict of manslaughter under intense provocation. TRIAL OF VEPNON. MELBOURNE, April 22.
