A Wanganui man was the victim of a neatly executed pocket-picking rrick at the Foilding races. He had just collected a windfall of £53, and with the notes safe in his trousers pocket, ho took position among the crowd watching the “tote” hoard. He says lie remembers two mon standing beside him and he certainly distinctly remembers one of the stamping heavily on one of his foot. Ho naturally lurched into the other man and ho remembers now feeling the other “genhand going into his pocket. The pain in his toes and the first man’s profuse apologies quite camouflaged the doings of the other man, who had disappeared in the crowd before the victim had collected sufficient presence of mind to try tn see his face. At the final meeting of the Late Brunner Borough Council, the Mayor. Mr. F. The debt, had boen reduced by ono_h<'ilf during the. term. The Taylor, ville bridge loan had been reduced by £lOO, while a large amount owing tn the Grey Hospital and Charitable Ai l Board, which had been left by the old

Council, had been paid off’. By means of Government grants the Council had received the sum of over £9OOO. Pract.• vally the whole of this had been spent or was now being spent in the district. This was a groat asset to the district and the Council could congratulate itself that in this respect alone it had done more for the district than any preceding Council, during a similar term. The Council had engaged a permanent roadman and in this also had proved that by careful management a great economy had resulted to the Borough. Previous Councils had maintained that this stop was impossible owing to the limited finance, but this had been proved a fallacy. Mr Boustridge concluded by thanking the Council and staff for the assistance they had rendered during the term of office. He ex. pressed his intention of presenting himself for re-election, and trusted that such, members of the Council as were peeking re-election would bo returned.

The ‘ •<; rey mouth Evening Star” has suddenly shown a concern as to the jrossiire of water 'luring the recent fir-o nt Stratford. Blair and Co’s saw mill, though it did not a! first feel worried. Il probably at first was thinking of the fact that on three <e easions previously the pressure and the Fire Brigade combined to .-•ivo the mill, but the law of averages. ;•- danced in the final result, did not qui f <‘ bear onl pri'vious estimates of the pressure. Much dissatisfaction is caused by the Pensions Department refusing the i.Ticroaso in the Old Age Pension to pensioners who have saved over £25 for burial purposes or who have a hut or a house worth above that amount. Many old people, have scratched and Raved a few x pounds together, a shilling or two at a time, so as to have a little by for a rainy day. They discover now that they are prevented from getting the increase of 2s 6d per week because they have not been spendthrifts. It seems thart there are many anomalies in the Old Ago Pensions Act that want remedying.
