DOCTORS BAFFLED. CASE OF A WOMAN. CHRrSTCIII'RCII, April 20. The origin of the cause of death is a question which has baffled the. pathologist at the Christchurch Hospital, and the Government Analyist in connection with the death of Ellen Eva Reader, a married woman, aged 22 years, who died suddenly in her bedroom in the house of her mother-in-law in Sydenham, on April 4th. They told the District Coroner, Mr Wyvern Wilson, who conducted an investigation, that the origin of the cause was unknown to them, though they had both examined portions of the body. “After I made an examination, I was unable to assign any cause for Sher death,” said Dr Pearson, Pathologist at the Hospital, who made a post mortem examination of the body on April sth. There were many minor causes, but none of them seemed sufficient. He made a microscopical examination, but that had re’ealed nothing beyond what he could see with his naked eye. The gene':: I appearance indicated the asphyxia! type of death, and, although he had not suspected it, he had been on the look out. for alkaloid poisoning; hut he had found no trace of it. The ease of death, ho thought, was asphyxia, due to unknown origin, associated with status lymphatieus in h moderate degree. Evidence was given by Mr A A. Bickerton, Government Analyist, who said that he had been given a portion of the br lin and the contents of the i stomach by the police, and he had made a chemical examination of them, but he could find nothing to account for death.
