REEFTON NOTES.

(Our Own Correspondent). The death of an old resident of the district, Air Patrick Molloy, aecurred at an early hour on Friday morning. The deceased, who had been in failing health for some time, was a native of Tull am ore, Ireland, and was 83 yenrs of age. He had resided in Reefton for upxvards of 40 years. He is survived | by a widow'- and family of five sons | and. two daughters: Richard, Daniel and Patrick (Reefton); John (Welling’ton); and James (Sydney); Mr« D. T.nhey (Wellington); and Sister Mary • Egbert, of the Mission Convent, Christchurch. Mr A. S. Jones, of Timaru, who .is. Stipendiary Steward for the West i Coast racing meetings, passed through Rccftoii on his way to Westport on Friday. Information has been received of the sudden death, at Mahakapawa of Mr W. IL Saunders, the well-known Mine ■ Manager. The deceased, who was about years of age, had been engaged in mining in this field since boyhood, and had at various times been manager of the Wealth of Nations, Keep it Dark. Millerton, and other mines. He is survived by a widow and grown.up family who have the sympathy of the whole community in their sudden and unexpected bereavement. Building Society. A meeting was held in the Council Chambers on Thursday evening for the purpose of forming a Loan and Building Society. Mr L. J. Bell occupied the chair and there were also present: Messrs A. B. West, N. Lawn Gore, Porter, Ale Donald, P. 11. Instone Dr. W. A. Conlon, Dr R. Church, Messrs Thos Phillips, J. D. Andrews, A. M. Carroll, M. Fagan; T. C. O’Brien, R. Mclntosh, E. W. Reeves, E. 1. Paine, A. E. Worry, J. B. Discaciati \V. Cooper, W’. Simmiss, W. B. Auld, A. Wills, H. T. Crumpton, G. Pascoe. Melton, Brazil, O‘ Donnell, Jones, Mor:The Chairman read the notice convey ing the meeting, and said the Society would fill a long felt want in the district. Mr W. Uooper then explained the aims and objects of the proposed association, and quoted from the articles of association of the Christchurch So'ciet\- to show the manner in which it would benefit, the individual members, .also the district as a whole. Dr Conlon then addressed the meeting, stressing the need for money in this district, and he thought this Society would be the means of people helping themselves, and they would benefit in the profits which would accrue. Mr Hawkes explained that in order to clear land with machinery, a loghauler, saw bench, tractor, disc, harrows, lime sower, etc., would be required. Hand stumping cost £B2 per acre. With power machinery it could bo done at £l2 per acre, or £l4 per acre. The cost of the machinery would be £l6OO. Mr E. W. Reeves moved that a Society of this description be formed, as he considered it would prove of great benefit to the district. Mr Fagan seconded the resolution, and felt sure that it would result in providing cheap money for the man on the land, and indirectly benefit the disrtict. Mr Reeves said the Society is to bo called the Inangahua Loan and Building Society. The motion was unanimously carried. Mr Phillips moved that a provisional committee of nine be appointed to further the objects of the Society. Mr Pascoe seconded., and the motion was carried. The following provisional committee were proposed:—Dr Conlon, Messrs W. Cooper, L. J. Bell, Fagan, Carroll. Gore, Porter, Discaciati, Paine, and Reeves.
