OPOSSUM CASE
FINES OF £25. (Per Press Association). WELLINGTON, July 23. Tct men were before the Court today, ehar;re.l with the iPcg.-.l removal of’ opossums. It was alleged again-t Ilenrv Chettiek and Joseph August that they took opossums without a license, removing them out of season. It was stated the movements of the accused had been closely watched by rangers employed by the Acclimatisation Society. A number of opossums ;ir.d traps wore found which lirid been set by Cue u.’ei so.l. Tt v. a difficult to detect offenders in such cases. A heavy fine was asked for if a conviction were recorded. The Magistrate agreed small fines were useless. Large profits could be made from the practice. lie imposed a fine of £25.
