CANADA TO FIJI CABLE.

A New Cable Being Tested. (A. and N.Z. Cable Association). SYDNEY, May 10. Mr Milward, manager of the Pacific Cable Company, says that the duplication of the cable from Canada to Fiji is held up pending tests or a new cable which is calculated to considerably increase speed and transmission of messages, and bring about • reduction in rates. If the tests are successful, all the cable companies r-.-cognise it will bring about a revolution in cable telegraphy. Mr Milward added that whilst he admitted wireless would play an important part in connection with strategic purnoses, was not feared commercially, in the near future. In any case, if commercial wireless developed, the cable concerns honed by an ultimate reduetioi in rates to compete successfully again-t it. The new type of cable now being tested is expected to increase the carrying capacity at least eight times as compared with what is possible at preSYDNEY, May 10. The steamer Stephen will shortly arrive from London with material for two new cables for the Pacific Cable aboard —one for Southport-Sydney line and the other for the Suva-Auckland section. As the routes are already surveyed, the work of laying the cables will be started shortly after the vessel ’s arrival.
