AFIRE AT SEA.

A LINER DOOMED. PASSENGERS SAFE. [A. and N.Z. Cable Association.] SAN FRANCISCO, October 12. The passenger liner City of Honolulu, from Honolulu for Los Angeles, is afire sfio miles west of Lus Angeles. Wireless messages stated that the ship was lowering her boats, and asked for assistance. Her position was 31 North and 131 West. Later messages stated that all the passengers were transfered to lifeboats. It is believed that 400 were aboard. The liner was formerly the North German Lloyd Fricdcrich. Dor Grosso, lately running between Honolulu and San Pedro. The fire proved to be uncontrollable and the ship was completely abandoned. The steamer Enterprise is expected to arrive in the vicinity of the boats at noon. It is also stated that a ship, not named, is picking up the passengers.
