Batson, licensee of the Com- 1 mercial Hotel, on a. charge of aiding I ami abetting certain offenders in the commission of an offence, to wit, that of being on licensed premises after; hours. After the evidence of Constable Fox and the licensee had been taken. . Mr Batson was fined 20s and 7s costs. Police v. E. Martyn, for supplying' liquor after hours.—Fined 40s and j aosts. A charge of keeping open for sale of liquor was withdrawn. POLITICAL. The effusion, presumably from the pen of the Editor of the f ‘Grey Star,” which appeared in that paper under the head ‘ ’Some Candidate,” is a disgrace to decent journalism. In it the writer seeks to belittle Air. James O’Brien, the chosen candidate for the workers in the forthcoming election, for no other reason than that tie stands for the workers. Three years ago Air Scddon lauded him for the sportsmanlike manner in which he played the game throughout the electioneering campaign—and he’ll do so again. True, it would take little space to say what he has not done—that if one •expected to find his wort is fairly stated in the ‘‘Star.” The writer who penned those, lines in the “Star” is a Reformer at heart, am for the sake of his job pens Liberal lines. His quasi-part isanship cannot ' be kept up by any other means than I to slander Labour and try to damage the “wise, cautious” gentleman I who is to represent the workers. If the “>Star’ ? could point the linger of scorn at Air O’Brien, it would not hesitate to rub the dirt in. Let us hope that none of the candidates wilt sloop so low as the “Star” to throw mud at their politic:'! cppoirents. The “Star” uses the phrase “Save me from my friends.” We (‘an safely leave it io Air O’Brien, because “ from his enemies he can defend himself” — tic i i .^i........ ... > 1.. • r rii.. <» st 11 'ill.

“Star” please note! lhe otar admits if he. stands he will put up a clean light. That’s an admission his supporters will be thankful for. It’s honesty, not the minority vote, which really concerns the '*6tar ; '; it s how they can play two strings to their fiddle. We expect nothing better than mud-slinging from the “Star, M but the mud-slinging will re-act on them, and Mr. O’Brien’s Borough experience is quite as good as if it were experience gained at the Harbour Board, at lhe Bar, or at afternoon tea, in spitr )of the mean, contemptible insinuating statements expressed by a biased op ponent of the workers. GENERAL. About the middle of July last. '.Messrs Lloyd Bros., of the Taramakau Settlement, while crossing the river with a load, got into difficulties. It was found necessary to take out the horse, and make for the shore. The cart was afterwards swept away ’■>’ the flood. On Sunday last the wheels and broken cart were found buried in the sand at the junction of Greenstone Creek and Taramakau. They had been swept down the river a distance of three miles. The finding oi the wreckage will minimise the loss, as the eart was a new one. Mr W. Nolan, roadman, at Wainihinihi, has returned after spending a week’s holiday in Christchurch. Mr. Harry George, snr., of Dillman stown, who has been in indifferent health for sonic time past, has been removed io the Westland Hospital.
