Mr J. B. Milne, spokesman fnr the Shipping Association, explained that the reduction rested with tin l owners of ships and not with the association. The difference between the New Zealand and Australian rales was influenced by the facts that, tho New Zea land coast line was shorter, and loading could be .‘luvomplished in less time. New Zealand steamers shipped for United Kingdom ports, while the Australian ships called at Continental ports. All kinds of produce was handled nt Now Zealand ports, and New Zealand wool was of less value. New Zealand wages were lower ;uid port dues lower.
