Mis W. M<-Farlane, of the Albion Hotel, who has been visiting Christchurch, returned last evening. Mr W. P. Power leaves to-day for Invercargill, where he has secured an appointment on the staff of a wellknown insurance company. Tho U. S. A. Copper King, Isaac Guggenheim, is dead, says a cable. After Jay Gould he was perhaps the most sensational speculator in America. l\lr Hewitt, S.M., is being succeeded as Resident Commissioner of Cook Islands by Judge H. F. Ayson, of the Native Land Court. The Clutha Presbytery has nominated the Rev. P. C. Durwood, M.A., of Lawrence, as Moderator. The Christchurch Presbytery has nominated Rev. W. O. Robb (Blenheim) as ModeratorGeneral. Miss Cecilia McFarlane, daughter of Mr Wm. McFarlane, of the Albion Hotel, who recently underwent an operation at the hands of Dr Morkane at the Lewisham Hospital, Christchurch, is now making excellent progress towards recovery. Rev. Dr. Cummings, M.A., M.S.C. of Dunedin, who is Professor of Hebrew at the southern University, was last night nominated by the Wellington Presbytery for the Moderatorship of the Presbyterian General Assembly. —Press Assn. A cablegram from New York states that on Tuesday Mr Root presided at special memorial ceremonies at All Saint’s Trinity Church on the occasion of the unveiling of a bust of the late Lord James Bryce. It is a British gift to the American people. The death took place at Buller Hospital of Mr H. Mayman, at the age of 52 years. He was formerly on the Westport Borough Clerical staff, and later ho conducted a store. Tie leaves a widow and on-e son (who is a teacher at Westport School), also two sisters and two brothers.
