LORDS “REFORM.”
FEAR OF LABOUR GOVERNMENT(Rec. July 21, 9.5 p.m.) LONDON, July 20. The Archbishop of Canterbury, in I the House of Lords, resuming the de- • bate on House of Lords Reform, said: i —The Government’s platitudinous resI ohitions wer-e not a satisfactory way of dealing with the problem. HeJ thought tlie Church of England would prefer a concentration of its representation to an extension of the bench of Bishops. He favoured the representation of the other denominations. Lord Buxton said he believed the present House of Lords carried more weight, prestige, and influence than before the passing of the Parliament ActIr had earned a reputation for broad inindedness, due to the influence of the ex-members of rhe Commons in it. He supposed the Government were pressing the reform, which there was not at present any agitation, owing to the fear of a Labour Government attaining office. No upper House, however well constituted, could perpetually thwart a labour Government, or any other Government commanding in the House of Commons. He did not believe these Resolutions would produce a more useful House than the present one.
