Owing to a slackness of trade in the coastal service, the Anchor Company’s steamer Kaitoa has paid off her crew at Nelson, and is laid up there. The auxiliary schooner Echo, engaged in the Wel-lington-Blenheim service, has paid oil : her crew at Wellington for the same, reason. Eight waterspouts were sighted fry the signalmaster at South Head (Sydney) between 10 a.m. and noon on July 3. Two of them towered to a height ranging from 600 ft to 700 ft. “Many years have elapsed since I have seen so many waterspouts in so short a time,” said the signalmaster. “At 10 a.m. the first two spouts towering to twice the height of the cliffs, were sighted through the rain to the southeast. They passed the station ami whirled away north. These were followed by six other spouts —all smaller than the first pair. They all came from the south-east and moved northward. One, however, broke when abreast of the heads.” Fortunately there was little shipping about at the time the spouts were operating. TELEGRAMS. WELLINGTON, July 17.
