BLACKBALL NOTES.

(Our Own Correspondent.) Quite a stir was caused in Blackball last Thursday, when it became known that Air AV. Leitch, of Avoca, and Air Redpath, of Christchurch, pegged out a coal lease which was lately held by the. Blackball Coal Company. Tho portion pegged out was known as the “New Lease.” After the lease had been pegged out, some officials of the Blackball Coal Coy. were seen going over the ground and examining the pegs, which appear to be quite in order. What is the position between the Blackball Coal Coy. and those who have pegged the now lease, we can’t well make out. but it was recently stated openly by an official of the Blackball Co., that the Company had no intention of working the now lease, as it was too expensive. Whalever the outcome of the pegging of the, new lease, it is to be hoped that the owners do not intend to tie up the area with exemptions. It has been stated that tho life of the Blackball Aline is about six years, and if that statement is true, then the other coal bearing areas should be developed so as to keep the town going.
