HOKITIKA NOTES.

(Our Own Correspondent.) The many friends of Air IL Craig, who is at present an inmate of the Westland Hospital, suffering from an attack of rheumatic fever, will be pleased to hear that he is progressing satisfactorily, and expects to be able to leave the institution in the course of u few days. There is a good deal of sickness about town. Many people are at present suffering from a form of influenza. During the last day or two large consignments of sawn white pine have been railed from the Hokitika wharf siding to Greymouth for shipment per s.s. Joan Craig to Australia. As a result of the cold frosty weather which we have experienced lately, the whole of the rivers along the Coast have again dropped very low. During the lust day or two, porpoises have been very numerous in the local roadstead. This is generally an indication of an approaching storm. The Pine Company’s mill on the Kokatahi Road, which has been closed down for some time past, has had a visit from the light fingered fraternity. Most of the mill equipment, consisting of tools, circular saws, belling, etc., has disappeared. I understand the police have the matter in hand, and the offenders will be brought to justice. A good attendance r.gain graced the euchre and dance at St Alary’s Clubrooms on Wednesday evening. Pho first prizes were won by Miss Williams and Mrs E. Heenan, and Messrs Hanrahan and T. Rouse respectively. The winners of the competition wore Air and Mrs J. Freitas. Miss AL Pascoe supplied the music for the dance, which was largely attended, and, under the direction of Mr E. Breu/.e, was kept moving until a late hour. Hokitika will make a friendly invasion upon Greyniouth to-day. The State School is sending forward four teams bv the first train, two teams of girls for basket-ball matches with the Greyniouth. school, and a senior team of boys to play football with the MarGrevmouth school, and a junior team of boys' to play ofotball with the Afarist school. A contingent of “fans’ will accompany the teams and over a hundred juveniles will comprise the party. By the mid-day train, the representative team of the Union with numerous supporters, will travel to Greymouth for the annual inter-Umon match. - .J ...j
