ANOTHER PEERAGE QUESTIONED.
BEEF MAGNATE EXPLAINS. LONDON, June 29. Lord Strachey called attention in the House of Lords to the peerage cont erred upon Mr Vestey, alleging that Vestey had transferred his business to Buenos Ayres in order to avoid the high English taxation. Mr Vestey replied that he transferred his foreign business to Argentina because of the high taxation and American competition, but his English business rem/ined and paid English taxes. It became a question of whether he should sr\ his business to American competitors or buildl works in the countries whence Britain imported meat. Before he did so he tried to come to some arrangement with the British Government in order to enable him to compete with Americans on equal terms, but the Government, could no, suggest a remedy. If this course had not been taken American meat companies would have eliminated their chief competitors.
