MILLERTON NOTES.

(Our Own Correspondent.) The long looked for r: in has made its appearance, and the shortage of water is now at an end, the only trouble is now, when will the rain cease. It. has a general habit of raining for a few weeks, when it starts. The annual meeting of the Soccer Football Association was held in M<Donald Hotel, Granity, on June 17. Delegates present were: —Granity Club (J. Hopkinson ami T. Alasterson); Thistle Club (J. AlcKinlay and G. Smith); AVanderers (T. Stainton ami J. Sutherland); United (S. Alay ami 11. Stanley); Denniston (R. Brownlie). The following officers of the association for the ensuing year were elected: — President, Air A. Dowgray; vice-presi-dent, E. Morris; secret: ry • and treasurer, R. McGregor; representative New Zealand Association, Air W. Allison, Wellington. Five tennis were affiliated for this year. The first draw for the Hall Cup resulted in Granity v. Thistle on July 1 at Granity and Wanderers v. United on July 1 at Alillerton; Denniston a bye. Air \\ . Clarke will j referee the Millerton match ; nd Mr J. I Ormonde the Granity match. Soccer Ims certainly come to stay in this dis- I trie! as keen interest is taken in the game. Every team has a good follow-j ing of supporters, ami some tough. I games are expected before the season < The United team played Granity on Sundry, resulting in a win for Granity bv 5 goals to 1. This game was played in a field of water, which was not i eomlm i\’<' to the best football, never-( theless, (iranitv deserved their win. I This team will take sonn* beating be-| fore the season is over. I The Rangers Rugby team played the ] Denniston Pirates at Granity on Sun-, d- y, resulting in a win for the Rangers bv *J points to 3. Brilliant football ( was marred by the sloppy state of the ground, which made it. very hard on | the players. r I iie Pirates arc to b? ( complimented in keeping their fixture, under such adverse weather conditions. The long looked for Druids’ ball is io take place on Friday next, June 3 L Secretary G. Gilbert ami his committee have left nothing undone to nuke this year’s ball the gem of the year. All roads will lead to Alillerton on Friday night. At lust the reduction in car farms up ami down the hill has come to pass. Mr A. Smallholme with a first-class up-|to-date “Republic” motor-lorry, is pre'pared to t:.ke passengers from Alillerton to Granity return for or, if . five passengers are available, he wilF l bring them up the hill for 3 6 each. I If he has anv goods to bring ui» he will take individual passengers at 3 T. This is certainly a reduct ion in what , . the people had to pay, .-ml it behoves | everyone to support a man who is pre II pared to give a reduction. If the ! other car owners move in the same line, | weli ami good. Ihe genera! reduction j in wages lately will have to be follow- [ <d by a general redm-tion in every-,I thing else, but we have failed to see • nv reduction in the cost of living yet. i The Court has again failed in its ■ pronouncement and worked another i point on to the toiler. \\ e will awaki n : Ito this fact, 1 hope, before another tour i Imouths come round. The \\J’.U. seem v to be the king pins in getting rid of j their coal. Their mines work every dav, but our neighbouring colliery, Stockton, is very often idle; another illustration of the Capitalist systemwork one lot of toilers at one time and starve : not her lot. I suppose our turn for idleness will come later. The Millerton Aline is at present fully manned. Aimers looking for work, should make sure that they can get oIT ■ here before they go to the expense of. coining here, as many are getting turn- j ed awav. The housing accommodation ; is fully taxed, and many of our miner; , are compelled to live in Westpcut asthev c: nnot get houses in Millerton or I Granity. I see by the Wellington | papers that spirits have been reduced l in price ami beer is likely to be reduced ; in price shortly. This must be a littl * soft soap to encourage Henry Dubb to vote for continuance. Anyhow, wwill kindly accept any reduction ami will deal with the ballot paper when the election comes round. Some say that drink drives you to Hades, but vou need not go so far : s that unless you choose, as a few sometimes will do you no harm.
