NELSON BOARD’S MEETING. At Monday’s meeting (which Hon Parr refused to allow to bo held at Westport there were present: Messrs Smifh (chairman), Boyes, Treacher Suantlebury, Baigcnt, Canavan, and Hon. W. J. Mclntyre. The head teacher, Reeftori was granted a refund of £7 for hot water service on leaving. The Supervisor's, Technical School Reefton, annual report was received and considered as satisfactory. The Board decided to ask the Reefton Committee to take control of the Reefton technical school. The Minister declined the Millerton Committee's request for a manual training building at Millerton. The resignation of Miss Conway, fourth assistant, Westport, and Mr Rumbold, headmaster, Reefton, wore accepted with regret. The Mawheraiti Committee applied for an addition to the school accommodation. The Board regretted being unable to grant it as under the regulations the present school accommodates 33, and the roll number is only 28. The Granity Committee asked for financial assistance, owing to the heavy liabilities. The Board suggested that the Headmaster arrange for the senior children to do the school cleaning and save the large expenditure wnicli could be used for school improvement. The renewal of leases sections 492 and 493, Westport, were held over till next meeting for inquiry; also the overdue rent on part section 1067. The Kongahu Committee was granted £lO for the erection of a woodshed, A 21 years’ lease of five acres of school reserve at Karamea Gorge was offered to G. Simkins, Umere, at £1 per year, and £2 deposits. The Board decided to call for tenders for the erection of a 20 by 10 shelter shed at Inangahua Landing. The Arapito Committee was asked to supply the estimated cost of the erect ion of a brick chimney. The Summerlea Committed was granted £3 10/- for work done to outhouses, minor repairs to the school building being the duty of the Committee. The Board decided to instal a washhand basin at Sergeant’s Hill School. The Director’s monthly report on the Westport Technical High School was received. The Board decided to

inform the Director that he must comply with al instructions received from the Board’s Secretary. The appointment of teachers this month was left in the hands of the chairman, the town members and the Senior Inspector. The Chairman reported on the Minister’s visit, and the opening of the new technical school at Westport. The Department had approved of the establishment of a board of managers at Westport, and the Board now asks the Council of Education for permission to carry out the election of the Board of Managers at an early date. The Board considered applications for th-o position of Director of fhe new technical high school, Westport. Fourteen applications were received, and after a full discussion the Board unanimously decided on the motion of Mr Mclntyre seconded by Mr Scantlebury, to send forward a name for the Minister’s approval, which will be published when approved. The application recommended was in attendance, the Board’s request, and was personally interviewed. The next Board meeting will bo held on Monday, July 17.
