The noted English actor, Rutand Barrington (of Gilbert and Sullivan Opera fame) is dead. The aviator Blake who is setting out on a flight round the world is a nephew of a Palmerston North resident, Air H. Glover. Mr Arthur Greenslade, of Nelson, is at present visiting Greymouth and is the guest of Mr and Airs AV. Green- : slade, of South Beach. Mr and Airs J. Muschamp and their daughter, arrived in Greymouth last Thursday, on their way to Christchurch on holiday bent. A London cable says that the late Sir Thomas Birkin, a lac-e manufacturer, of Nottingham, has left a fortune of two millions sterling. On Thursday evening a marriage was solemnised at Holy Trinity Church by Archdeacon Carr, the contracting parties being Air D. A. Spencer (Kotuku) and Mrs J. E. Rurham (Hokitika). His many friends will regret to learn of the illness of Mr 11. E. Holland, AI.P., who, having returned to AVestport, is at present suffering with a severe cold. Air Holland is confined to bed, and he has been compelled to cancel speaking engagements for next week at Dunedin and cl&ewhere. We | trust Air Holland will make a speedy i recovery. ‘ Aliss Dixon, who for some years has 1 been Alistress of the South Spit School, near Hokitika, was on AVednesday tendered a farewell social by tfin residents, the Hokitika School Committee chairman (Mr AV. Shannon) making a presentation to Aliss Dixon of a fine solid leather suit case. The Chairman referred to Aliss Dixon’s great success in the school and her high grading as a teacher. The Inspector’s reports of her school were always highly satisfactory. The Committee as well as the residents were very sorry to lose Miss Dixon’s services. However, he was pleased the parents were making their appreciation in a tangible way. He wished Aliss Dixon a very pleasant holiday and future success in her profession. Alessrs King and Richards (of the School Committee supplemented Air Shannon’s remarks, and Air Garnet Perry returned thanks oil behalf of Aliss Dixon. The evening passed off most pleasantly with songs, recitation, children’s duet and dancing.
