The National organisation is avowedly opposed to the proportionate system, bnt the Progress! ves regard it as essential to their -existence. A (dash is anticipated whi'n the Government takes steps to amend the electoral system next session. The Economy Stunt. With a view to securing economy and better ami more efficient control, the business undertakings run by the City Council are in future to be conducted strictly on commercial lines. \ start has already been made with the electrical supply by which it is hoped to transform the present substantial lo**s on working into profit without increasing the cost of current. As an example of the expensiveness of the existing system, an aiderman declared that under public bender, instead of the present methods, the cost of cleaning the city could be reduced by £50,000 annually.
