WINTER SCHOOL.

SUCCESS AT HOKITIKA. (Per Press Association.} HOKITIKA, May 19. ■ The Winter School, organised by the W.E.A. and the Canterbury Progress League for farmers and teachers, which commenced on Monday last, and concluded this evening, has proved very successful. Professor Shelley was the director, assisted by Professor Condi iff e, with Mr IL Belshaw (secretary) and others from Canterbury College. Great interest was shown in the school and the lectures have been well attended, increasing substantially as the week jnugressed. A number of excursions into the country were made during the- afternoons, on Tuesday and on the two d:.ys Winter Show at Kokatal:i was visited. This proved a great success, the visitors beng greatly surprised at the extent and quality of the exhibits, notably the oats, chaff, hay and other farm produce, while the home ■ookery section was specially fine, winning many encomoums. The representatives of the Canterbury Progress League also attended the school, and to-day they inspected bridges in South Westland in course of erection, with a vew lo impair’,-ig into complaints of much delay. The southern rivers ire holding up traffic. Hi spite of the fact that the Waitana bridge was completed some months ago, it is still, owing to the need of road approaches, a long way from the stage which will allow traffic to usi| the bridge. The teachers and students of the Winter School were entertained at supper this veening, and general expressions of satisfaction were voiced at the success achieved, and the hope waexpressed that the school will be made an annual one.
