WINTER SCHOOL.

OPENS AT HOKITIKA. (Our Own Correspondent.) A esterday the above school began at Hokitika. Town Hall at 10 a.m , under direction of Professor J. Shelley .Christchurch), and Mr A. Bershw, W.K.A. Secretary. The programme for the- day was as follows:— 10 a.m. —Official opening; 10.30 to 11.30 a.m.— Lecture: •The General outlook in Education,” Prof. J. Shelley; 11.30 a.m. and 12.30 p.m.—‘‘Rural Education and Rural Citizeuslrp,” lecture by H. Belsbaw. M.A.: 2. pm. —visit to Hokitika Racecourse to observe draina.re and inspect terrace lands; informal discussion on drainage problems: 7.15 p,m,- Popular lecture. •‘Modern Drama.” Prof. Shelley; 8.30 p.m.—Supper and informal entertainment : students and lecturers being the guests of M. AV. J. Jefferies (A’iee-President of the Westland Progress I.eague. The school had a most successful opening yesterday. The programme for today is as follows: 9.30 a.m. to 10.30 a.m. —“The Economics of Dairying,” lecture by Mr Bel(dmw. M-A. Teachers’ class, Modern Tendencies in Education,” by Prof Shelley; 10.30 a.m. to 11.30 a.m.— Lecture. •'The F.conomV Prospect, by Prof. J. B. Condliffe (Christchurch. 11.30 a.m. to 12.30 p.m. Discussions: 11.30 p.m.—Departure for Kokatahi Show; 3 p.m.—lecture. “Cattle. ’ Mr J. Stafford, MB.CVS ; to be followed by demonstration and judging of points of dairy stock; Evening, Popular lecture at Kokatahi by Prof. Shelley. The publ : e are cordially invited to attend all lectures. Among those who spoke yesterday at the opening were the Mayor, Mr G. Perry, Mr B. Ward (County Chairman), Mr H. L. Morel (President of the Westland A. and P. Association); Hons. J. Grimmond and H. L. Michel, Professors Shelley and Condliffe, and Mr Belshaw (tutor). Among the Canterbury visitors to the Farmers’ Winter School are: Mr Mullcoek, a member of the Halswell County Council, ami Mr Bryant, a member of the Evre County Council. There is a very attractive display of pictures typical of West Coast scenery at the Town Hall in connection with the school. All parts of the district appear to be represented and the display is certainly worth while. Among the painting! are early views of the Hokitika and Grey Rivers and an interesting series of new photographic scenes by Mr H. Peart which have been tinted by a. new process by a. Tiinnru artist.
