BLACKBALL NOTES.

(Our Own Correspondent.) I! The : uciilent that betel! Mr J. Neil;ou, mine turned out to be nore serious than was at first anticipated, and he has been in a rather seri ms condition. Latest reports are that i change for the better has now U ken I phice. Messrs John Watson, mining mana nor, and Mr Fred Elliott, secretary of the Blackball Coal Company, were visi- | tors to the Westport races and the box- j ing contests. The trip was made in Mr Watson’s private car. The ventilation of the No. 1 Section has been the cause of further complaints. The new fan house is now well on the way to completion. Pat Tooker, one of our local sports, has left for Orongorongo Tunnell, and a little send-off was arranged in his honour. Mr P. Hill, of Greymouth, and Miss E. McDonald, daughter of Mr ami M s [ L’. McDonald, of Blackball, were the I interested parties in a wedding which I took place in the Presbyterian Church, Blackball, on Wednesday, March 29. The Rev. Mr Cuttle, of Greymouth, officiated. After the ceremony a wed- I. ding breakfast, which was spread in Mettrick’s Hall, was done .justice to, after which the usual felicitations were

offered. A public dance, in honour of the occasion, was given : t night. Everybody, including the bride and bridegroom, seemed supremely happy. Some of the Blackball Notes seem to [ have been getting on the soft spots of 1 certain individuals. However, it is in- !

tended to hew to the line, let the i chips fall where they may. [ The Government Valuator has given I the Blackball township the once over. | We understand he missed nothing. As j a result the coffers of the Grey County i Council will commence to bulge. Speak- ■ ing generally, he seems to have given j satisfaction, although in one or two in- | stances, an objection seems to be in | order. When the “hoot” commences to i roll in, we trust the Blackball citizens i will have a little more attention paid to ] their welfare. Water, sewerage, and ( lighting .schemes are badly wanted. j The Rugby Leaguers have commenc’d , training operations and are this season • starting out with the good intention of i getting into condition for the competitions. The Soccerites are so tar proving a little lakadasical, but the news that Ruuanga and Gri'y are getting into harness and that there is a prospective visit from Millerton Wanderers in sight, has quickened the interest, and Secretary Kerr intends having his players tuned up this week-end. The Australian team’s visit will give Soccer a lift on the Coast. The Blackball Soccer Club are to give a concert, to be followed by a social and dance, on Friday, April 28, Hie proceeds to go towards financing the visit of the Australian Soccer Team to the West Coast. Watch for the posters. The Arbitration Court is to sit shortly and hear arguments as to why wages should not be reduced still further. It is a foregone conclusion that the T.mployers’ Federation will eagerly quote the figures produced by the Statistician, that food groups, etc., etc., have, according to the index figures, gone down sufficiently to warrant them in asking for a further good cut in wages. Wonder when the wage-earning class will wake up ami throw overboard a system that bases their existence on a fodder basis.
