ROSS NOTES.

(Our Own Correspondent). 1 regret to record the death of Mr John Douglas, a well known and respected settler of Waitahi, which took place on last Friday night. The deceased had been in indifferent health for some time and the end came rather suddenly. He was a native of Woodstock aud was about 50 years of age, and leaves a widow and family of four sons and two daughters, also a number of brothers aud sisters who will have the sympathy of the community in their sad bereavement. A number of Ross residents met in the Coronation Hall recently. The Mayor (Mr S. P. Evans) occupied the chair and presented Mr A. P. Sharkey, who is retiring from the railway service after over 30 years’ service, with a valuable rug. The Mayor recounted the many good qualities of the recipient and Andy in a neat speech suitably replied. The Ross spinsters organised a ball that took place in the Totara Hall on last Friday night and there was a good turn out, the hall being well filled and tastefully decorated. The ladies had charge of the floor and also provided efficient music. The catering was in capable hands and a good supper was handed around, and the large assemblage kept the ball rolling till the small hours of the morning. The following night a children’s social took place and they rolled up in large numbers, appearing to enjoy themselves to their hearts’ content as they tripped around the hall to the strains of suitable music.
