WESTPORT NOTES

HOSPITAL BOARD MATTERS.

(Our Own Correspondent.) Master Lobb. reported- at ttie Buller Hospital and Charitable Aid Board meeting held on Friday night that everytiiiiig during the past 'month had gone on very pleasantly. The visiting committee Messrs Lottrcll and Shanks reported most favourably on tho renovation and improvement work lately done by the caretaker. As a result of Mr W. Mclntyre representation a the Dominion Hospital conference held recently at Wellington. A Government subsidy of £500 has been allocated to the Buller District Hospital and Charitable Aid Board. Before proceeding with the general business of the B.D.H. and C. Board meeting on Friday night, the newly elected members Mr G. Hawcs, Waimangaroa, and Mr A. Thomas Denniston were welcomed to the table by the Chairman Mr A. C. Cottrell. Both I tho new comers "responded. They reI cognised tho responsibility of the position and promised to work "iiT'the interests of the entire community. Five nurses on the staff of the Westport Hospital qualified for invalid cooking during the month. At tho Hospital meeting on Friday night, Mr W. H. Mclntyre asked for the appointment of a midwife for the Country districts, he being of the opinion that one nurse, was insufficient .'to cope with the work required. It was proposed, seconded, and carried unanimously at tho B. H. and C. A. Board on Friday night that all business whatsoever kind transacted in connection with the institution bass through the Secretary. A member: — "The Secretary is the only man we can hold responsible." Tn reply to a letter from the Education Department re free medical treatment for school children at the local hospital, members of > the Board are of tho opinion that responsibility for same should be shouldred by the State (and so say all of us!) | f Mr R. Patterson, pronounced some emphatic" views" to resolution passed at the monthly meeting of the Buller Hospital and Charitable Aid Board on Friday. Ho asked that his vott. against the resolution be recorded ir> the minute book. In future a report from the gardener is to be submitted monthly detailing vegetables produced snd used by the local hospital and Old Peoples' Home. Mr W. H. MeTnfyre, Millcrton mem/ ber on the Hospital Board made a* earnest appeal, and put up a strenuous fight for tho abolition of the anaesthetic and operation fees charged at the Buller District Hospital. Dr. Foote was present and pointed out that in hospital in other parts of the Dominion where no anaesthetic and operation fee was charged, very different conditions prevailed from those obtaining locally. In his opinion abolition would be a rcsrograde step for the Board to take. Mr Mclntyre thought thai! the Doctor's arguments merely served to strengthen tho case for the abolition of tho fees. Mr Thomas (new member) was inclined ,o i„\uiir abolition. He tnouync j.->a-" .io:r.s .-iiioiiiti be charged for hospitai ' treatment accoruing to rate of wages received. Alter expressions of opinion irom individual members, Mr Mcxjityre's proposal' was lost on tne casting vote f of the Chairman. The tinfc of the year being most opportune your correspondent quotes the following from a little card _ust put into circulation in Westport: — "May dame fortune ever smile on you, But never her daughter, Miss Fortune," The approach of the season of toasts and good wishes reminds us that the Irishman's toast is, "Let Her Go Gallagher. ' ' The little steamship Nile loosened her moorings at 8 a.m. on Friday morning and sailed away with a cow p.*ul a conch aboard for tha "Land of Milk and Horuey." ~"~ M.-istors Horace Greenwood anr 1 Frank Stoo returned to Westport during tho week to spend six weeks' summer mention. Small farm -holders round about Westport are making hay while the weather during the past week has been ideal for business, and men, holding one or two cows, or more, have been noticed storing dried grass ava? for feed for their little herds during the coming winter months. Much and 1 all as the building is in need of a new coat, the WcstpoTt Borough Council states it hasn 't sufficient f-nds to paint the Town Hall. Scvcrr" big buildings in the town have latv lv- 'undergone a goocl mopping -wit} 1 . soap and water, and look all the better for the doing. If paint is hey or" 5 fiin Council's finance, perhaps it conY jitTord n few shillings to have the Town Hall's face washed for Christ7vn.«! there's still .tire better part of a week yet to fn.
