Sinco Wednesday tho Conciliation Council has been sitting in Greymouth in ordor to hear disputes 5n connection with tho proposed awards affecting .shop assistants in the drapery, grocery, chemists and butchery trade. Uptil yesterday's adjournment agreejjrtants ]>.a,d been arrived, at for wages and conditions i?i the iirst three aoovenientioned trades. • . Tliis morning the Council resumed its /session and the assessors discussed a possible award for the butchery trade. ' ; .i • : In tho discussions affecting the awards for other businesses the wages in' tho latest Canterbury awards were taken as a. basis, but the employers' assessors were not prepared to &jjrec to a. butchers ' award on tho same uasis. Tho Canterbury Butchers Award provides for the following scale of AV agcs.— lst. Shopman £5/10: 2nd. Shopman, £5: Ist Sifiallgoodsm.cn, £5/10 nil other workers, £4/10/0. Youths under 17, 30/-, 17 to IS jJS/- f IS to 19 £2/5, 10 tc 21 £3. A youth between 10 and 21 who has scrv'cd not less than 3 years, £3/5, Casuals 2/6 an hour, 4S per week, SJ hours on 4 days, 9 hours on 1 day, son tho half-holiday. Hours between 7 a.m. nnd 5 p.m. on !5 days, 7 a.m. to noon on one day, including new bonus. These wages will be regarded as a flat rate. After considerable discussion it was . agreed that the Canterbury award wages '•.? accepted, with the exception » that sev.ior assistants received £4/1 0/fi.
