ARMY EXPENDITURE ON WAR.

PROPOSAL TO REDUCE IT. (Reed December 16, 10.40 p.m.) LONDON, December 16. Mr. Asquith moved a motion in Parliament for a reduction of the supplementary Army Vote. It was defeated by 186 votes to. 82. The debate centred on the British policy in Mesopotamia and in Persia. Mr. Lloyd George said that a reduction of their forces in the East was going on, steadily. They now were bent on setting up an, Arab State, and a complete withdrawal from Turkey w saproposed in the spring. The guardianship Of the Dardanelles was to be in the hands of Britain, Franco and Italy.

AMERICAN TARIFF CHARGES. (Reed. December 16, 11.35 p.m.) WASHINGTON, December 15. A Bill has been introduced into the U.S. House of Representatives, imposing a duty of fifteen cents a bushel on wheat, and of ten cents on corn, also on sheep, one year old, of 150 cents, and on those less than a year i old, of 75 cents. Other duties proposed are: — Unwashed wool, 12 cents I a pound; on washed' wool 24 cents; on scoured 36 cents; on all manufactured wool, 12 cents a pound. These arc in addition to the duty' already existing.
