(Per Press Association.)
CHRISTCHURCH, December 6
An almost incredible tale of "gullibility" Vas unfolded before Mr Bailey S.M., when Arthur Patrick McGuire Janet McGuire (his wife), Cecil Charles McCullough and Frederick John Wormald, were charged with conspiring to defraud W. J. Cupples of £'194 4s, between December 1915 and October 29th, 1918. Charges of obtaining this amount by false pretences were withdrawn. ' ■ ■
Detective Sergeant AlcTllveney, who conducted the prosecution, stated that Cupples, whilst working at the Mount Magdala Home for Women, had become enamoured of one, of the femnles, among the inmates. He endeavoured to obtain her release, through the McGuires, who produced two alleged Scotland Yard Detectives, namely^ Wormald and McCullough. for the purpose. Cupples had paid over the moiiey, on the assumption that itwas being used for the purpose of releasing the woman. : When arrested in the North Island Wormald and McCollough had admitted connection with the matter.
The evidence having been heard, Mr Hunter submitted that a wife was not liable to be brought in guilty of conspiring with her husband. The point was upheld and the femalo accused was discharged.
The others pleaded not guilty, and were committed for trial, bail being allowed.
