♦ A Poverty Bay district resident, Mrs S. Gray, lost three sons last week from influenza, while a fourth was lately killed at the front. Mr. H. E. Holland, M.P., who recently recovered from influenza, is again unwell and confined to bed, and has been granted leave of absence from the House for the present week. A popular young Bruiiner resident Mr Frank Keenan, died suddenly on Wednesday evening. He was attacked after tRe evening meal with a fit and succumbed without regaining consciousness. He was 28 years or age. Mr S. C. Isaac, of the Education Department, Wellington, Senior Inspector of Technical Schools, is at present visiting Greymouth, having arrived last night. He will conduct an examinaton for teachers in handwork on Saturday next. Permission to hold this examination has been granted by ! the Health Department. The late Private William Patrick Kelly, son of Mrs M. J. Kelly, Greymouth, wno was one of the victims or the epidemic, died at ChrTstchurch Main Hospital. He was 35 years of age, and had been granted his discharge from the forces. Private Kelly was well-known and highly respected by many friends on the West Coast. After ten years of good service as Medical Officer of the State Miners' Medical Association, Dr. Meade has handed in his resignation as from February lsfc next. It is understood that he will proceed to the United Kingdom and resume his profession in a leading hospital there. His departure will be regretted by those among whom he has been working, as he has always given them every attention and general satisfaction. The Countess of Dudley, whose matrimonial affairs have interested a number of London folk recently, was well known and much like while in Australia during the Earl's term as Governor- General. She visited New Zealand once, for the sake of her health, but preferred to come incognito to escape the inevitable entertaining. She is a very beautiful women, dark in colouring, and very bright and amusing. Her daughters — the Ladies Honor and Morvyth Ward are very pretty girls, and have been greatly admired in London.
