GREYMQOTH BOROUGH

LAST MEETING OF PRESENT COUNCIL.

I The usual meeting _ of the Greymouth Borough Council was held last evening when there were present: — His Worship the Mayor. Councillors H. C. Harley, Q. T. Grace, E. M. Sheedy, H. F. Doogan, Stubbs, Goodall. W. H.i Parfitt and J. W. Gxeenslade. <* A motion that the Nationa? Bank be asked to advance the sum of ;£iS,ooo for the year ended 31st March, iqiS, was carried. F. Cragg, E. Andrews. T. Johnson, and E. Bellis requested that a street lamp be erected at the junction of Nelson Street and Milton Road, agreeing to use gas in their residences. ! They alsp drew attention to the state of Nelson Street. . The Mayor .thought that the matter should be referred to Gas Manager for report. . Councillor Harley said that he would move that the request be granted as it was very dark there. He thought that it was a fair proposition as a "•np was badly needed. ' The standing orders were suspended and. the Gas Manager's report was read. On Councillor Greenslade's motion it was decided to refer the -matter .''to the Gas Manager to report as to the cos*. With reference to the state of the road it was decided that the matter be left in the hands, of the engineer. Councillor Stubbs moved that the blackberry nuisance on the police reserve in Arney Street be brought under the notice of the owners. The motion was carried. W. Shaw wrote drawing attention to the state of the footpath between Thompson Street and the Town Belt. * Councillor Sheedy said that the street was in a bad state. He had often noticed its state. He moved "That the engineer be instructed to effect repairs." Councillors Parfitt seconded the motion and referred to the speed au wnich motor cars came round the corner of Thompson Street and the a own Belt. As the cars ran very close to the fence at that point he ) moved that the Engineer be asked to place a post there. . The Waipara County Council sent a letter in reterence to the growing of toodstutts. The latter was received. The valuation of hotel properties and the reduction /of sanitary charges formed the subjects ot communication from 53 Borough Councils in reply to the council's enquiry. The replies were received. Councillor Grace referred to a hole in the street near the Railway St- . tion, which was a nuisance in wet ' ; weather. ' ' . , < The engineer explained that that portion of the street was railway, property. Councillor ( Grace moved that the ( matter be brought under the notice ! of the railway authorities, as the mat- : ter was in the interest of the public. < The motion was carried. - 1 Councillor- Grace also moved that the Tainui Crossing danger be again brought under the notice of the Railway Department. The council agreed.

GAS MANAGER'S REPORT

The Gas Manager (Mr. Kennedy) *n reporting on the question of erecting twp street lamps applied for, stated: "Lamps are now unobtainable, there is even a difficulty in obtaining glass for the lamps now in use.

"So that I would therefore recommend that the question of installing these two lamps be held over for the present ; should a settlement of the strike be not reached by next' week it would be wise to consider the' question of restricting the output of gas.

"The supply of water to the town is the chief consideration." The report was adopted.

FINANCE REPORT

The Finance Committee throiigh its chairman (Councillor Greenslade; imported as follows: —

"I beg to report that a meeting of the Finance Committee, was held, on Thursday the 12th April, the Mayor and Councillors: Greenslade. (chairman) Parfitt, Goodall. B'tubbs. Grace, Harley, Doogan and Sheedy being present.

"Applications were received frpm the ionowing ladies for the two temporary positions on the clerical - staff pf the council, viz. .Misses A. M. Kelly. M. Elliot, Ida M. Winchester, L.: McCallum, 1. Baxter, M. O'Leary, K. Rochford, E. Hewlet. E. Wright, C. Brown, E. McKe.egan, M. Sloane, M. B. Walker, C. Rathburn. V. Cotter, I Weenink and Jessie Hambleton. The committee having been empowered by the council to deal with the applications appointed Miss Hambleton to the senior position at a salary of £2 per week. Miss Winchester being appointed to the other position at a salary of £1 15s per week. In addition to the above mentioned matter the. committee transacted : the following business and now request you to confirm the various recommendations which are : —

"That accounts amounting to £503 8s which were examined by the committee be passed for payment ail being payable frpm District Funa Ac. Accounts amounting to .£364 15s 2d which were paid since last meetingwere also examined.

/'That the High School Committee be advised that there is a Borough By-Law controlling the speed pf motor vehicles.

"That the sum of .£lO voted to the Technical School be forwarded to the Instructor of Engineering, with .the stipulation that grant is for the Engineering Department.

"That Mr. Goodall. borough lamplighter, be granted, a fortnight's holiday, the Gas Manager to make arrangements for. a substitute during Mr. Goodall's absence.

"That no action be taken re an\increßse of wages of the Junior Clerk. "Receipts for March IQI7. /0149 ss--7d Expenditure .£1463 13s 7.
