BRILLIANTLY SUCCESSFUL.
ON THE FRENCH FRONT.
LONDON. April 18,
A French cpmmunique states: In the region south of ,?St Oueiitin tnere his been very great mutual artillery activity. South of the Oise and east of the lower Cruck Forest there have been numerous patrol engagements. Between Soissons and Auberive we carried out night operations in detail, securing us considerable advantages. To the west,' a brilliant action gave us the village of Cerayonne and a complete position at Chivy. - North-east of these places we carried the whole ground as far as the approaches to Braye en Laonnois. in-' to which our patrols ; penetrated. In the/ sector of Villeau Bois, which we captured, we took several fortified works; also the wood east thereof. In Champagne,, counter-attacks on our positions on both sides of Mont Cormillet were stopped short by our fire and resulted in bloo'dv enemy losses. The artillery duel was violent on a great part of the attacking front. The enemy had withdrawn heavy and field artillery to the rear. Nevertheless, we captured twelve guns, including three heavies and a considerable quantity of machine-guns and numerous trench engines. We made prisoners of 14,000 since April 16th.
