MEETING OF THE COUNCIL

• The meeting of the Greymouth Borough Council last evening wa; attended by His Worship the Mayor (Mr G. E. Perkins), and Councillors H. C. Harley, E. M. Sheedy, H. F. Doogan. J. \V. Stubbs, J. Goodall, \V. H. Parfitt, and J. Greenslade. Renewals of their leases of portions of municipal reserves in Cowper Street were sought .by Hanrahan I Brothers and M. Molan. The renewal I was granted in each case, the applicants to be written to pointing out that their rents must be paid in January. | A letter from the Petone Borough ' Council with reference to the pay of the single men in The Motor Patrol Service, which that council considered was adequate. — Rreceived The Mayor thought Government should give the same benefits to the single men as to.the married men. He moved that the Petone resolution I should be supported. This was carried. j The 'Canterbury Education Board per Messrs C. H. Opie (chairman) ■ and H. J. Bignall (member) offered '.£5B 10s in full settlement of the Council's claims for .£93 -ios as rates on various schools. I The Mayor moved that the amount offered be accepted, and Councillor Sheedy seconded the motion, which ■ was carried. J Tlje Council received a statement signed by Parkinson and Co and J. I H. Keddie x in reference to the alteration of closing hours. The chemists are seeking to obtain authority to close their shops earlier. The statement was simply a statutory matter and the Council decided that the necessary seal be affixed. Two Councillors (His Worship the Mayor and Cr Doogan) were authoris ed to sign the deeds or* agreement in reference to the Cobden Brfdge. FINANCE COMMITTEE The Finance Committee reported, as follows : — Accounts amounting to £817 4s gd be passed ' for payment; .£7OB 4s 2d being payable from District \Fund Accont and £g> os 7d from Town Improvements Loan Account and £100 irom Cobden Bridge Loan Account. — 1 Adopted. > . . .• That accounts amounting to ,£lOl4 ' 7s 2d which were paid since last meet ing were examined, £oiq 12s lid hay' ing been paid from District Fund Account and £t)4 14s 3d from Town Impr'vements Loan Account. —^Adopted. The Committee , cannot recommend +bat an allowance b.e made to Mr Furlong for time lost through meeting with an rodent whilst at work in the Gas Works. — Adopted. That one weeks wages be paid to Mr T. Furlong in lieu of a week's holiday in view of his long and faithful services. — Adopted. That wages of Messrs Joyce and A. Goodall be increased by is per day. —Adopted. That exemption respecting narrow, streets be applied for, for that part of O'Nennell Lane; approximately 24 feet . wide and that the Public Works Department be advised that part is a .public street under provisions 117 of the Public AVorks Act, . igoB— Adopted That the matter concerning Mrs Sullivan's lease of a Borough reserve be referred to the s Reserves Committee. — Adopted.
