GREY PATRIOTIC COMMITTEE.

*•* A meeting of .the Greymouth Pa triotic committee was held in the Council Chambers, the followingmembers Leing present— His Wor ship the Mayor (chairman), Messrs E. A: Wickes, P. J. McLean, F. Campbell, J. D. Lynch, D. Carter, D .McKay, H. C. Harloy, Eev Patcbett, and' F. H. Den ton (secretary.) It was resolved to write to the Government requesting a return showing a list of patriotic committees who have contributed to the Defence Fund. Tine Chairman reported that he had made arrangements for a wounded soldier, who had received his discharge to return to New South Wales where he belonged, the exponses being defrayed by the Committee. The man in question enlisted at Greymouth with tbe first volunteers to join the main force. — The Chairman's act ion was endorsed. Mr. Carter reported that the sub-committee appointed to coir fei\ Avith tbe committee of the Young Men's Club had met the Club representatives. The Committee is of the opinion that a caretaker at a salary of £1 per week should be engaged to alien; to the Club's rooms, the use. of which had been granted fnee to soldiers, and that the caretaker's salary be defrayed by the Patriotic Committee. It was also suggested that the Borough Council help by reducing the rent of the Club rooms. It was resolved that the offer j of the Young Men's Club be accep ted, and that the Committee pay flic salary of a caretaker at the rate suggested, and that the Club be called the "Young glens' and Soldiers' Club.' It was decided that Messrs Car ter, Lynch and McKay be appoin ted a sub-committee to represent committee of the Soldiers' Club. It wss resolved that the Salvation Army authorities be notifed that tbe committee regrets that it cannot give the donation voted from the funds in the hands of the Government, owing to the money ment for general war purposes, having been used by the Governas stated in a letter received from tbe Minister of Defence. It was resolved that offciers' grants be made only to men who are bona fide residents of the com mittoe's area. s It was resolved that enquiries be made of the Government as to whether . grants are -made to noncommissioned officers as well as to commissioiied officers.
