EMPIRE-WIDE CELEBRATIONS.

LONDON, October 21. Trafalgar Day was celebrated throughout the Empire. Numberless wreaths were placed in Trafalgar Square in memory of the sailors killed in the war. They included tributes from the oversea Dominions, Japan, and other Allies. N Some 116 patriotic meetings were held in support of Lord Derby's campaign. Thousands of picture theatres showed naval films and there was half an hour's address upon the navy in 20,000 schools. The Bishop of London delivered a «i algar Day sermon to a crowded congregation at St. Martin's-in-fields. He said that in former times chivalry lightened the horrors of war, but it is otherwise with our present enemies. Their foulest and latest crime was tbe murder in cold blood of a poor defenceless English girl, the crime dwarfing even that of the Lusitania. What would Nelson have done in such a case as Miss Cavell's murder? He would not have resorted to diplomatic enquiries. He would have made enquiries with, the thunder of the fleet's guns. Nelson's spirit was dead in our young men if they did not want to know the reason why this foul crime was committed. There was a great Red Cross appeal in London on the occasion of -rafalgar anniversary. Many thousands of lady collectors participated, though the weather was showery. j. raf algar Square presented a memor- > able scene. Nelson's column at the base was ntliered with wreaths from the pcd T estal between the lions. The' voices of recruiters floated over the dense crowds at intervals. The people were thrilled by the cleat notes of a trumpeter playing "The •eath of Nelson." The j service at St. Martin's-in-fields was impressive by its solemnity and simplicity. The Bishop's impassioned appeal ahd denunciation oft Miss Cavell's murderers deeply stirred the congregation. / Many Red Cross collectors were on duty at the early markets at 3.30 a.m. Collections by Australians in the Strand from the sale of flags and kangaroo souvenirs were devoted to the Dardanelles. Among the collec- j tors were Ladies Mcßride, Robinson,. JNewton, Moore, and Miss Ada Crossley. , •'- . .-...;
