WAR NEWS.

FOR NEW ZEALANDERS.

HIS FORCES DEPLETED

[PEB PBESS ASSOCXATION— COPYBIGHT.]

WANGANUI, October 21. General Godley, writing to Colonel Hughes, praises the gallantry of the New Zealand troops, and says that it is impossible to find in military history anything finer than the night march of the Wellington Mounted Rifles through desperate, scrub-cover-ed country on August 6th, or the assault of the Wellington Infantry Battalion on Chunuk Bair Heights on the morning of August Bth. General Godley adds : "We are woefully depleted in numbers at present, infantry brigades numbering only 1200 instead of 4000 and mounteds 400 instead of 2000."
