The driver was Walter Monkhousje, Tnd when he appeared before Mr. D. O. A. Cooper, S.M. at the Magistrate's Court he pleaded guilty to cruelty and •11 treating a horse by working it with" an open sore on its back. "In that case," said Inspector Hendry, "I would like Yoiir Worship to see the horse. It is outside the Court, and ppeaks for its own sufferings." 1 Mr. Cooper consented, and on returning- to the Court he said to the defendant : "It is a pity black g-aurds like you cannot be thrashed for committing an offence like tLis." Defendant : "But it is my first offence. T have never been before si Court until this time. I have only iust started driving. It's my first offence." His Worship: "Your first offence? You nuist have known all the time how that poor horse was suffering " Defendant: "No I didn't." His Worship: "Nonsense, you are fi'ied £$, in. default two months Larc* labour.' Defendant^ Will you ffive me. time?" His Wcrship; "No, I wont."
