Mr F. H. Denton, Town Clerk, has been granted four weeks' holiday on very urgent private business. Of the seven remaining life members of the Legislative Council, five are octogenarians, namely, Sir Charles Bowen, Captain W. H. D. Baillie, Sir Henry Miller, Sir George McLean, and the Hon. J. D. Ormond, the last-mentioned being the youngest. Lieutenant A. E. Conway, whose bravery at the Dardanelles was Teferred to in the cable messages in Tuesday's issue, is a Eeefton boy, 24 years of age, who before his enlistment was on the staff of the Magistrate's Court at Greymcuth. He has always been a very keen Cadet and Territorial, and had passed his examination for a captain's commission. When war broke out he joined the 13th Regiment under Major Cribb, and went away with the Main Expeditionary Force. He was later asked to join the machine-gun section under Captain Henderson, which he did. Not only was Lieutenant Conway a keen soldier, but was highly esteemed by all who knew him on the West Coast and in Christchurch. — Christchurch ' ' Press. ' '
