BRITAIN'S ACTION RESENTED
STRONG PROTEST FROM
UNITED STATES
Received 9-5 P- m
WASHINGTON, Dec. 29
The United) States has addressed a strong remonstrance to Britain against the treatment of American commerce by the British fleet. 'The note despatched to Sir Edward Grey asserts that much hostile feeling has been generated in the United States owing to the activities against American cargoes. While the representations are made in a friendly spirit it is pointed out that public opinion holds- Britain responsible for the present depression in American industries. Reimßursement for seized cargoes is declared to be no remedy for grievances. , , , The chief difficulty is the moral r3fect on American exporters, who restrained from taking risks _ whic.i otherwise they would in trading to neutral' countries. A, full statement of the British attitude is asked for in order to take steps to P#ect American citazens-.en-gaged in legitimate trade. The note is vigorously worded and is declared to be, the strongest addressed to any belligerent since the outbreak of the war.
