QUEBEC, May 29. , The instances on the Empress ot Ireland were £400,000 on the hull, and £150,000 on the cargo. She was one of the most popular ships in the Canadian trade. She was "double- bottomed and divided transversely by ten bulkheads, so that at normal draught any two adjoining jcompartments might be flooded without endangering- her safety. She carried sixteen lifeboats, seat irig- 764, twenty Englehadt collapsible boats seating 920, -and four berth-on < boats seating 170, also 2,212 adult and 150 children's life jackets.
