COAST V. CANTERBURY. WELL DESERVED WIN. (Par Press Association.) I CHRISTCHURCH,' Aug. 24. The Canteibury team played the third 6f its oiiter-provincial- fixtures for the season this afternoon, when it met the West Coast team. The/ weather was beautifully fine, and very little wind was ' blowing. There -was a, large attendance of spectators. ' The game, which resulted in a win for the Coast by 17 to 14, was .one- of the fastest and most interesting wit- ' nessed in Chiristchurch for some years, and the issue was in doubt right up to "the call of time. The winners thoroughly deserved their victory, playing with a great. deal of dash in comparison with the languid efforts of Canterbury, and had they possessed . a little more finesse . they would have won by a still Jarger total. Their forwards outplayed the Canterbury pack, and! their - backs shone up much better than, the Canterbury rearguard,, one or two of whom performed very poorly Mr . J. F. Coast kept up the attack, poor play by Payne assisting them until. Horion secured and after a good run passed P.att>erson who xan half the length of the field and scored. He -took the kick himself and landed a fine goal— Canterbuary 5; Coast nil. Half time sounded immediately after with the scores — Canterbury 5; Coast .3. RING SCORES. Upon resuming Coast quickly set up an attack, and' from a 'passing rush Ring got over. Coast continued to* press until McDonald cut off "a pass/ and- kicking across to Hasell the latter witih a fine run. took the 'ball well" down, the field and, Sherlock getting into difficulties, Morgan and Howison took the ball over the" line, Morgan scoring. Patterson failed to convert—Canterbury- 8; Coast 8. Play'nov/ became faster and more interesting. At this stage Godfrey, one of the Coast front', rankers retired hurt, his place being taken by Rogers. Burns led a hot forward attack but Coast forced.' On Saturday the Grey State school : team journeyed to Hokitikai to play . a friendly game with ,- the Hokitika boys. The match, wihich was commenced at 1.30 p.m.,, was .played in 1 Cass/Square, in the presence of a good number of supporters /of the teams. [ Greymouth won the toss, and played with the wind behind them. Reynolds (Grey) secured the ball shortly after • the kick-off and sprinted down the line about twenty-five 'yards and then , passed in to Campbell, who was upended by the. Hokitika full-back; Pascoe (Hokitika) found the line \vith'-a good kick. M'Queen (Grey) carried the play into the Hokitika territory, , "out. an infringement . gave the local team some relief. Pascoe (Hokitika) :next showed up with .a fine run to within three' yards of the visitors' line,' where he was well ' tackled' -by Gordan .McKay. Pascoe, however, was not to be denied, and crossed ,the line shortly afterwards. Henderson's kick failed. Shortly after the second spell bad commenced Henderson 'scored, and taking . the kick himself, added the - major points. Pascoe shortly afterwards scored his second .'-try,- after a splen- , did', run..' No goal was kicked. The .game ended without any further incident, leaving Hokitika victors by it points to nil."
