LARGE INCREASE IN FIVE YEARS. (By Elertrir Teleffiaph— Copy-rijpDt.) (Per Press Association 1 .) August 22. In reply to a ouestion regarding the rumour that Japan was negotiating with France for the purchase of New Caledonia, it was officially stated in the' House that nothing was known of the authenticity of the report. Available information indicated that four .to • five thousand Japanese were now resident in New 'Caledonia, as against 1 1500 five years ago, and' this was the foundation for the allegation. Most of. the new immigrants are Japanese ex-soldiers.
