(Per Press Association.) A GREYMOUTH CASE. DUNEDIN,Aug..23. In the Supreme Courr to-day, before Sir Joshua Williams, a married couple named Lawrence, formerly . of Greymouth and now residing at Hobart, applied for a writ of Habeas Corpus to gain the custody of their child, now adopted by a family named Gregory at Greymouth. No allegation was made concerning the treatment of the child, which is well looked after, but it is alleged that no order for adoption was completed. The' mother, having regained her health, desires to obtain the custody of the child. . The case is still proceeding. ' A CHARGE OF MURDER RE- . DUCED. AUCKLAND, Aug 2 3 . At- the Supreme Qourt to-day Tame : liana .Wairepa was; charged with the murder of his younger brother,^ Te Hamana Wirepa,' and. -also wounding with intent William Nowiand, and Tt.rirjiaprc Wurepa. The charge v.as the- result of a quarrel; on June sth at the Maori nah nearTe Kaha »r. the Bay of Plenty, when the principals concerned had been drinking together. 'Th-3 defence was that occused was drunk and was not in a fit state to know what he was doing, .having no intention of committing the murder. The Jury returned a verdict of manslaughter and Judge Cooper sentenced accused.to seven years' imprisonment.
