A TERRIBLE FATAUNY
BUSH TRAMWAY' TRUCKS KILL ENGINE DRIVER. (Per %ess Association) TAIHAPE, Aug 23. A terrible fatality occurred at Rangataua on Thursday afternoon when the Powell Process Co' sbiish tramline engine, with trucks carrying" four logs to the mill was travelling down a steep grade. Owing to the slippery rails the engine got out of hand, rapidly increasing its velocity after covening half a mile. When rounding a curve the brakesman was shot . off into the scrub • un- r hurt. It as thought that a great shock occurred two chains further as the engine jumped the Tails and the heavy load crashed into an engine drawing logs, smashing the I'dativer,. Percy' Small, and killing him instantly. The body was frightfully mutilated. '. The engine pushed ahead -■ half a chain then overturned', the Togs 'going two chains 'further, where the trucks were smashed to matchwood. The rails were torn up and great havoc was caused. '...'■>■ Deceased was single, aged 26, and his parents live in Nelson, whither the body was taken to-day in charge of his brother, the relieving ' stationmaster at Rangataua. . An inquest was held arid . a verdict of accidental death was returned, no blame being attachable to anyone.
