The- extensive overhaul to whi^th the Mararoa has been subjected is completed, and the vessel looks as spick and span as a new ship. She resumed her commission up her usual ferry run to Wellington last night. Captain C. Clift will be in command of the Mararoa until Captain Manning returns from his holiday, and the following deck officers' will be associated with him:—Mr A. J. R. Barr (chief), Mr C. Keeffe (second), and Mr W. Bowerman (third). A collision occurred between the steamer John and the Defender in Wellington Harbour on Wednesday. The Defender Jiad •completed loading general cargo for Hokitika and was moored at the Glasgow wharf. The John was shifting down, and when the captain rang "full speed astern" the engines refused to act. The first mate, seeing a collision was imminent, with commendable presence of mind let go the anchor. If this had not been done the John would have crashed into the Defender's stern -and one or both vessels would have sunk. As it was., the Defender received a good smash on thestern, the marks of which are still visible. As the Defender was not leaking in any way she came on to Greymouth.
