SEVERAL IMPORTANT RESOLUTIONS.

MELBOURNE, Jan. 19. The Premiers' Conference resolved n favour of the appointment of a committee of leading railway engin cersito report on the . question of a unifoa-m gauge between the capital cities and vhe cost of conversion.
New South Wales and Westralia voted against the motion, o'ni tlie ground that tlhe report was nor) likely in view of the differing- claims of the various States and the Commoiiwalth, to bring nearer solution the question of secuiing uniformity.
Wihafc assistance should be given to iimmigj-ants was referred to the heads of the State Immigration Department. It was further resolved to ask the Commonwealth Government to provide 25,000 assisted passenger .immigrants yearly, paying vhe cost of .transportation on a uiV-form basis, the States to select and: place immigrants with the Tight fb supplement' the number.
