SERIOUS DISASTER AVERTED

O AMARU, Jan.-19. .. A mfixed *rain, carrying 20 cases df motor spirits, had a narrow (©scape from disaster on the journey up from Dunedin to-day. After passing through.the Otepopo tunnel and on arriving akl Herbert ■ Station dt was discovered that some of the spirits that had escaped from the, tins was; on fire.
The stationmastier with several other railway hands, and a stranger, entered the wagon at consiMerablei irisk to themselves and removed tihe cases throwing, tlhose that were leaking; and cases burning over ■•Jh© bank and covering them over with' eaith and- shingle. . Only about 14 sound cases were found. .' -
Only for the prompt action, of the men a serious disaster .might have occurred.-
